According to the World Happiness Report 2025: Gabon, the 6th happiest African country.
Gabon manages to strengthen its quality of life despite persistent structural challenges
T he latest World Happiness Report places Gabon 97th globally in terms of happiness, thus confirming an honorable position within the African continent. Ranked 6th in Africa, Gabon is ahead of major countries like Côte d'Ivoire (98th) and Congo (100th), placing just behind Mozambique (96th) and South Africa (95th).
This ranking is based on six objective criteria: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy at birth, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. Gabon particularly benefits from a good level of social support and a relatively high life expectancy, reflecting significant progress in the health and well-being sectors.
Despite a moderate GDP per capita compared to better-ranked African countries, Gabon is distinguished by a clear improvement in generosity and social cohesion, trends highlighted in the 2025 report. The Gabonese population shows progress in the quality of social relationships and a more positive perception of institutional integrity, marking significant progress in the fight against corruption.
The African ranking is dominated by Mauritius (78th globally), Libya (79th), and Algeria (84th), countries with strong economic or political stability. However, Gabon manages to strengthen its quality of life despite persistent structural challenges. In conclusion, this new position for Gabon testifies to a more marked balance between economic development and the improvement of social conditions. To sustain this momentum, it is crucial to intensify efforts regarding transparency, infrastructure, and public services, in order to sustainably consolidate the well-being of the Gabonese people.
